The water pump of a high-pressure washer is designed to pump water at a far higher flow rate than the pressure washer can handle. This is especially true for an electric-powered pressure washer.
A pressure regulator is needed in a high-pressure washer to control the pressure and flow of water. It allows the user to select the desired maximum pressure, below which the machine will operate at any time. The regulator is usually located downstream of the pump, near the gun and hose connections.
